Long Bio:
Lullatone is made up of two members:
Shawn James Seymour and
Yoshimi Tomida.
I would like to tell you a little story about them:
Background:
Shawn grew up in America where he met a beautiful Japanese exchange student named Yoshimi when he was just 19. She convinced him to move back to Japan with her when her US visa ran out. Before he had moved there he had spent much of his time in America using various instruments to make melodies to soundtrack openings at art galleries and so on. But, he could only take one of his instruments with him to Japan because there just wasn’t enough space in his suitcase for more. So he decided to carry along just one toy keyboard and he could carry the rest of his melodies around with him in his head.
Yoshimi didn’t know she was an artist at first. She also didn’t know she was a singer, or a lot of other things. But, when Shawn first saw the small doodles she made at the bottom of her little notes to him, he had to show everyone. And everyone marveled over her petit drawings and she became more confident. She also grew used to Shawn’s camera constantly being pointed at her (he was working as a photographer then) which loosened her up enough to start to sing in front of people.
Part 1 /// the duo in America:
Shawn asked Yoshimi to help him with a new music project he was forming to play at some of the art parties that were happening around the city. He had heard her hum along with some songs and knew that her voice was perfectly cute enough for the new types of melodies he had been working on since meeting and being influenced by her. So, she became the singer of their party band. They played cute little pop songs full of hyperactive beeps and melodies and synchronized dances and so on. Many people loved them and danced along and wanted more. But, Shawn and Yoshimi decided to end this band before they moved to Japan because they couldn’t take so many instruments with them.
Part 2 /// the duo in Japan:
Yoshimi had a computer. In the wee hours of the night as she slept there in their apartment, Shawn discovered how to use it to program small lullabies for her. He would often wake her just to say “Listen to this melody that I made for you to sleep to.” She lost a lot of sleep thanks to his lullabies.
Remember, he had only brought the one toy keyboard. Well, the simplicity of only using that one instrument influenced him to make simpler songs. So, with the computer he only programmed his melodies with sine tones, which are the simplest and purest type of sound. His melodies also became simple and pure. Then he bought a xylophone because it also has a very cute and simple sound.
After he finished making many of these melodies some labels started to release CDs of his music and people all over the world began to listen to them. And he started to perform the songs live. But he didn’t like playing alone live, so, before long, he once again asked Yoshimi to join him on stage and sing over the melodies. Slowly the songs became a mix between lullabies and pop music, and audiences all over the world began to float away with their slumber party pajama pop.
